Poultney Summary
Poultney is a town located in Rutland County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,196 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Green Mountain College, a small liberal arts college.
History
Poultney was chartered in 1761 by Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire. The town was named after Sir John Poultney, a London merchant and friend of Wentworth. The first settlers arrived in 1770, and the town was incorporated in 1781.
The town was an important center of iron production in the 19th century. The first iron furnace in the town was built in 1791, and by 1810 there were four furnaces in operation. The iron industry declined in the mid-19th century, and the last furnace closed in 1871.
Geography
Poultney is located in the western part of Rutland County, in the Taconic Mountains. It is bordered to the north by the town of Wells, to the east by the town of Castleton, to the south by the town of Granville, and to the west by the town of Pawlet.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.2 square miles, of which 33.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3%) is water. The town is drained by the Poultney River, a tributary of Lake Champlain.
Economy
The economy of Poultney is largely based on tourism and education. The town is home to Green Mountain College, a small liberal arts college, which provides jobs for many of the town's residents. The college also attracts many visitors to the town.

Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,196 people, 845 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 66.3 people per square mile (25.6/km2). There were 945 housing units at an average density of 28.6 per square mile (11.1/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.86.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 19.7% under the age of 18, 16.2% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,945. About 6.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.3% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
