Plainfield Summary

Plainfield is a town located in Washington County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,364 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Barre, Vermont Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Plainfield was first settled in 1790 by a group of settlers from Plainfield, Connecticut. The town was officially incorporated in 1798. The town was named after Plainfield, Connecticut, the hometown of many of the original settlers.
The town was an agricultural community for much of its history, with dairy farming being the primary industry. In the late 19th century, the town was home to several small industries, including a sawmill, a gristmill, and a tannery.

Geography

Plainfield is located in the northern part of Washington County, in the Green Mountains of Vermont. The town is bordered to the north by Cabot, to the east by Marshfield, to the south by Berlin, and to the west by Worcester.
The town is located in the Winooski River Valley, with the Winooski River running through the center of town. The town is located at the intersection of Vermont Route 2 and Vermont Route 12.
The town has a total area of 40.2 square miles, of which 39.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.

Economy

The economy of Plainfield is largely based on agriculture. Dairy farming is the primary industry in the town, with several large dairy farms located in the area.
