Wartrace Summary
Wartrace is a small town located in Bedford County, Tennessee, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Duck River, approximately 25 miles southeast of Murfreesboro and 50 miles southwest of Nashville. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.
History
Wartrace was founded in 1807 by William Walton, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after the nearby Wartrace Creek, which was named after a Native American chief who lived in the area. The town was originally known as Walton's Crossroads, but the name was changed to Wartrace in 1817.
In the early 19th century, Wartrace was a major stop on the stagecoach route between Nashville and Chattanooga. The town was also a major stop on the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad, which was completed in 1854.
The town was home to several Civil War battles, including the Battle of Wartrace in 1863. The town was also the site of a major Confederate victory in the Battle of Wartrace in 1864.

Wartrace is located at 35°37'25"N 86°20'45"W (35.623750, -86.345837). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Wartrace is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, including the Wartrace Horse Farm, which is a popular tourist attraction. The town is also home to several antique stores and other small businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 152 families residing in the town. The population density was 790.2 people per square mile (305.3/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 337.2 per square mile (130.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
