History
Trenton was founded in 1823 by William Trent, a Revolutionary War veteran. The city was named after him and was incorporated in 1824. Trenton was the first county seat of Gibson County and was the site of the first court house. The city was a major trading center for the area and was the site of the first bank in the county.
Trenton was a major stop on the Memphis and Ohio Railroad, which was completed in 1858. The railroad brought increased economic activity to the city and helped to make it a major shipping center for the region.
During the Civil War, Trenton was the site of a major battle in 1862. The Battle of Trenton was fought between Union and Confederate forces and resulted in a Confederate victory.

Trenton is a major agricultural center for the region. The city is home to several large farms and is the site of the annual Gibson County Fair. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory, a plastics factory, and a metal fabrication plant.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.3 males.
