Tiptonville Summary

Tiptonville is a town located in Lake County, Tennessee, United States. It is situated on the western shore of Reelfoot Lake, a shallow natural lake that was formed by the 1811–12 New Madrid earthquakes. The population was 2,439 at the 2010 census.

History

Tiptonville was founded in 1823 by William Tipton, a veteran of the War of 1812. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1875. It was the county seat of Lake County from 1876 to 1891, when the county seat was moved to Tiptonville.
Tiptonville was the site of a major battle during the Civil War. On April 7, 1862, Confederate forces under the command of General Gideon Pillow attacked Union forces under the command of General Ulysses S. Grant. The battle, known as the Battle of Island Number Ten, was a decisive victory for the Union forces.

Geography

Tiptonville is located at 36°25'25"N 89°25'17"W (36.423750, -89.421417). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Tiptonville's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, including a large dairy farm. The town is also a popular destination for fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,541 people, 1,039 households, and 690 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,150.2 people per square mile (445.2/km2). There were 1,150 housing units at an average density of 517.2 per square mile (199.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.71% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.18% of the population.
There were 1,039 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,250. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
