Oneida Summary
Oneida is a city located in Scott County, Tennessee, United States. It is the county seat of Scott County and is part of the Knoxville, Tennessee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,520 at the 2010 census.
History
Oneida was founded in 1854 and named after the Oneida tribe of Native Americans. The city was originally known as "Big Creek" and was renamed Oneida in 1856. The city was incorporated in 1875.
Oneida was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1863. The Battle of Big Creek Gap was fought between Union and Confederate forces. The Union forces were victorious and the Confederate forces retreated.
Geography
Oneida is located at 36°25'25" North, 84°30'45" West (36.423, -84.512). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Oneida is the home of the Oneida-Scott County Industrial Park, which is home to several businesses, including a Tyson Foods poultry processing plant. The city is also home to several retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,541 people, 1,845 households, and 1,213 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,082.2 people per square mile (418.7/km2). There were 2,039 housing units at an average density of 487.7 per square mile (188.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.53% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.20% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,921, and the median income for a family was $32,917. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,972 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945. About 16.2% of families and 19.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 17.2% of those age 65 or over.
