Loretto was founded in 1820 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was named after the town of Loretto, Italy, which was the birthplace of one of the settlers. The town was originally known as "Loretto Station" due to its location on the railroad line.
The town was incorporated in 1871 and was the county seat of Lawrence County until 1876, when the county seat was moved to Lawrenceburg. Loretto is home to the oldest Catholic church in the state of Tennessee, St. Mary's Catholic Church, which was built in 1845.
