Lafayette Summary
Lafayette is a city located in Macon County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 4,474 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Macon County. The city is located in the central part of the state, approximately 70 miles (110 km) east of Nashville.
History
The area that is now Lafayette was first settled in the early 19th century. The city was named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The city was incorporated in 1845.
During the Civil War, Lafayette was the site of a major battle between Union and Confederate forces. The Battle of Lafayette was fought on June 18, 1862. The Union forces were victorious and the city was occupied by Union troops for the remainder of the war.
Geography
Lafayette is located at 35°37'25" North, 85°51'17" West (35.623607, -85.854720). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Lafayette is a small city with a diverse economy. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory, a plastics factory, and a paper mill. The city also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,474 people, 1,845 households, and 1,097 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,072.2 people per square mile (414.3/km2). There were 2,039 housing units at an average density of 487.7 per square mile (188.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% were non-families. 34.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $32,917. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945. About 17.2% of families and 20.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
