Jamestown Summary

Jamesown, Tennessee is a small town located in Fentress County, Tennessee. It is situated in the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains and is the county seat of Fentress County. The town was founded in 1823 and is named after James White, the founder of Knoxville, Tennessee. The population of Jamestown was 2,072 as of the 2010 census.

History

Jamestown was founded in 1823 by James White, who was the founder of Knoxville, Tennessee. White had purchased the land from the Cherokee Indians and named the town after himself. The town was originally known as White’s Station, but was later changed to Jamestown. The town was incorporated in 1825 and was the first county seat of Fentress County.
The town was an important stop on the stagecoach route between Knoxville and Nashville. It was also a major stop on the railroad line between the two cities. The railroad line was completed in 1854 and was a major factor in the growth of the town.
