History

Humboldt was founded in 1823 by William Montgomery, a Revolutionary War veteran. The city was named after Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist and explorer. The city was incorporated in 1854.
During the Civil War, Humboldt was the site of a major battle in 1862. The Battle of Humboldt was fought between Union and Confederate forces. The Union forces were victorious and the city remained in Union hands for the remainder of the war.
In the late 19th century, Humboldt was a major center for the timber industry. The city was home to several sawmills and lumber companies.

Geography

Humboldt is located at 35°51'25" North, 88°51'25" West (35.856944, -88.856944). The city is situated in the western part of Gibson County, near the junction of U.S. Route 45 and State Route 186.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.

Economy

Humboldt's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large manufacturing plants, including a Tyson Foods poultry processing plant and a Whirlpool appliance manufacturing plant.
Agriculture is also an important part of the local economy. The city is home to several large farms, including a large hog farm and a large dairy farm.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,452 people, 3,521 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,026.2 people per square mile (396.7/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 481.2 per square mile (185.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 3,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
