Greenbrier Summary

Greenbrier is a city located in Robertson County, Tennessee, United States. It is part of the Nashville metropolitan area. The population was 5,935 at the 2010 census.

History

Greenbrier was founded in 1810 by William Green, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally known as Green's Station, and was later renamed Greenbrier. The town was incorporated in 1871.

Geography

Greenbrier is located at 36°30'25" North, 86°41'17" West (36.506944, -86.688056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Greenbrier is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a variety of restaurants and retail stores. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a plant that produces automotive parts.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,935 people, 2,310 households, and 1,637 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,145.2 people per square mile (442.2/km2). There were 2,457 housing units at an average density of 476.2 per square mile (184.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.45% White, 3.45% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 2,310 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $23,958 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,845.
