History

The area that is now Dickson was first settled in the early 19th century by European-American settlers. The city was named after William Dickson, a prominent local judge and politician. The city was officially incorporated in 1803.
During the Civil War, Dickson was the site of a major battle in 1863. The Battle of Dickson was fought between Union and Confederate forces, resulting in a Confederate victory.

Geography

Dickson is located at 36°3'25"N 87°22'25"W (36.056944, -87.373611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), all land.

Economy

Dickson is home to several major employers, including the Dickson County School System, Dickson County Government, and the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 14,538 people, 5,845 households, and 3,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,295.3 people per square mile (500.2/km2). There were 6,323 housing units at an average density of 562.3 per square mile (217.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 15.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 5,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,845, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945.
