History

The area around Cumberland Gap has been inhabited for thousands of years. The first Europeans to explore the area were the Spanish in the late 16th century. The first permanent settlement in the area was established in 1750 by Thomas Walker, a surveyor and explorer from Virginia. The settlement was named Cumberland Gap in honor of the nearby mountain pass.
In 1775, the area was the site of the Battle of Cumberland Gap, a skirmish between American settlers and British forces during the American Revolutionary War. The battle was a victory for the Americans, and it helped to secure the area for the newly formed United States.
