Camden Summary

Camden, Tennessee is a small town located in Benton County, Tennessee. It is situated on the banks of the Tennessee River and is the county seat of Benton County. The population of Camden was 2,845 as of the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Camden was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as Benton Court House, and was later renamed Camden in 1820. The town was named after Camden, South Carolina, which was the hometown of the first postmaster.
The town was officially incorporated in 1836 and was the county seat of Benton County. During the Civil War, Camden was the site of a major battle between Union and Confederate forces. The Battle of Camden was fought on April 7, 1862 and resulted in a Confederate victory.

Geography

Camden is located in the western part of Benton County, Tennessee. It is situated on the banks of the Tennessee River and is approximately 30 miles east of Jackson, Tennessee. The town has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of which is land.
