Brentwood Summary

Brentwood is a city located in Williamson County, Tennessee, United States. It is a suburb of Nashville, and is located about 20 miles south of the city. The population was 37,060 as of the 2010 census, making it the seventh-largest city in the state.

History

The area that is now Brentwood was first settled in the early 1800s by European-American settlers. The first post office was established in 1854, and the city was officially incorporated in 1969.
The city was named after the Brentwood Plantation, which was owned by William Christmas. The plantation was named after the town of Brentwood in Essex, England.

Geography

Brentwood is located in Williamson County, Tennessee, at 35°59'N 86°51'W. It is situated in the Nashville metropolitan area, and is about 20 miles south of downtown Nashville.
The city has a total area of 24.2 square miles, of which 24.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Economy

Brentwood is home to a number of large corporations, including Nissan North America, Tractor Supply Company, and Healthways. The city also has a thriving retail sector, with a number of shopping centers and malls.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 37,060 people, 13,845 households, and 10,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,527.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the city was $100,945, and the median income for a family was $118,871. The per capita income for the city was $50,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
