Athens is a city located in McMinn County, Tennessee, United States. It is the county seat of McMinn County and the principal city of the Athens, Tennessee Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is part of the larger Chattanooga-Cleveland-Athens Combined Statistical Area. History
Athens was founded in 1822 as a county seat for McMinn County. The city was named after Athens, Greece, and was incorporated in 1831. The city was a major center of the Civil War, and was the site of a major battle in 1863. After the war, the city experienced a period of growth and prosperity, and was home to several prominent businesses.
Geography
Athens is located at 35°26′N 84°37′W (35.4333, -84.6167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.6 km2), of which 8.6 square miles (22.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
Economy
Athens is home to several major employers, including the Athens Regional Medical Center, the McMinn County School System, and the Athens City Schools. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 13,220 people, 5,541 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,527.2 people per square mile (589.3/km2). There were 6,093 housing units at an average density of 707.2 per square mile (273.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 5,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $37,945. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $21,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945.
