Yoncalla Summary

Yoncalla is a small city located in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Umpqua River, about 10 miles east of the city of Roseburg. The population of Yoncalla was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

Yoncalla was founded in 1851 by a group of settlers from the Willamette Valley. The town was named after the local Native American tribe, the Yoncalla. The first post office was established in 1854.
In the late 19th century, Yoncalla was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the early 20th century, the town began to decline as the timber industry moved away from the area. The population of Yoncalla dropped from a peak of 1,500 in 1910 to just over 1,000 in 2000.

Geography

Yoncalla is located in the Umpqua Valley, about 10 miles east of the city of Roseburg. The city is situated on the banks of the Umpqua River, which flows through the city. The city is surrounded by rolling hills and is located in a temperate climate zone.
