Geography

Phoenix is located at 42°20'25" North, 122°54'45" West (42.340278, -122.912500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

The area that is now Phoenix was first settled in the late 1850s by pioneers from the Midwest. The town was originally called Phoenixville, but the name was changed to Phoenix in 1872. The town was incorporated in 1887.
The city was named after the mythical bird, the Phoenix, which is said to have risen from the ashes. The city was also known for its orchards and fruit production.

There were 1,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $41,964. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945.
