Mosier Summary

Mosier is a small city located in Wasco County, Oregon, United States. It is situated along the Columbia River Gorge, approximately 8 miles east of The Dalles. The population of Mosier was 541 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Mosier was first inhabited by the Wasco and Wishram Native American tribes. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the early 1850s. The town was originally known as "Mosier's Station" after the first settler, John Mosier, who established a trading post in the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1910.

Geography

Mosier is located at 45°41'17"N, 121°7'17"W (45.688056, -121.121389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Mosier is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several wineries, including the Columbia Gorge Winery and the Mosier Valley Vineyards. The city is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 541 people, 230 households, and 140 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 250 housing units at an average density of 411.7 per square mile (158.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 91.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
There were 230 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
