Milton Freewater Summary

Milton Freewater is a city located in Umatilla County, Oregon, United States. It is part of the Pendleton-Hermiston Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,050 at the 2010 census.

History

Milton Freewater was founded in 1885 by two brothers, Milton and Freewater. The brothers had come to the area to homestead and decided to name the town after themselves. The town was incorporated in 1887 and was originally known as Freewater. In 1889, the name was changed to Milton-Freewater to reflect the contributions of both brothers.
The town was an important stop on the Oregon Trail and was a major shipping point for cattle and sheep. The town was also a major center for fruit production, with many orchards in the area.

Geography

Milton Freewater is located at 45°59′17″N 118°28′17″W (45.9879, -118.4714). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Milton Freewater is a major agricultural center, with many orchards and vineyards in the area. The city is also home to several food processing plants, including a Nestle plant that produces frozen pizzas. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including a winery, a brewery, and a distillery.

As of the census of 2010, there were 7,050 people, 2,717 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,179.1 people per square mile (1,225.2/km2). There were 2,945 housing units at an average density of 1,323.2 per square mile (510.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 14.2% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 24.2% of the population.
There were 2,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $36,944. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $21,964 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945. About 14.2% of families and 17.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
