Lyons Summary

Lyons is a small city located in Linn County, Oregon, United States. It is situated on the banks of the South Santiam River, approximately 20 miles east of Albany and 25 miles south of Salem. The population of Lyons was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Lyons was first settled in the 1840s by pioneers from the Willamette Valley. The first post office was established in 1851 and the town was officially incorporated in 1891. The city was named after the nearby Lyons Creek, which was named after a local settler, John Lyons.
In the early 1900s, Lyons was a thriving agricultural community, with a variety of crops being grown in the area. The city was also home to several sawmills and a brickyard. In the 1950s, the city began to experience a decline in population as many of the local businesses closed.

Geography

Lyons is located at the confluence of the South Santiam River and Lyons Creek. The city is situated in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, with the Cascade Range to the east and the Coast Range to the west. The city has a total area of 1.3 square miles, all of which is land.
