La Grande Summary

La Grande is a city located in Union County, Oregon, United States. It is the county seat of Union County and the largest city in Eastern Oregon. The population was 13,082 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of the La Grande, Oregon Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Union County.

History

La Grande was founded in 1868 by French-Canadian settlers who named it after the Grande Ronde Valley. The city was incorporated in 1883. The Union Pacific Railroad arrived in 1884, and the city became a major transportation hub for the region. La Grande was the site of the first public school in Oregon, which opened in 1869.

Geography

La Grande is located in the Grande Ronde Valley at the base of the Blue Mountains. The city is situated at an elevation of 2,845 feet (867 m). The city is located at the intersection of Interstate 84 and U.S. Route 30. The Grande Ronde River flows through the city.

Climate

La Grande has a semi-arid climate (Köppen climate classification BSk). Summers are warm and dry, while winters are cold and snowy. The average annual precipitation is 16.3 inches (414 mm). The average annual snowfall is 33.3 inches (845 mm).

La Grande's economy is largely based on agriculture, forestry, and tourism. The city is home to several large employers, including Eastern Oregon University, Grande Ronde Hospital, and Union Pacific Railroad. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 13,082 people, 5,093 households, and 3,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,845.3 people per square mile (715.2/km2). There were 5,541 housing units at an average density of 776.3 per square mile (300.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 3.7% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 5,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,945, and the median income for a family was $38,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $22,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,945. About 11.2% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
