Gates Summary
Gates is a small city located in Marion County, Oregon, United States. It is situated in the Willamette Valley, approximately 10 miles east of Salem, the state capital. The population of Gates was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
History
Gates was founded in 1871 by William Gates, a pioneer who had come to Oregon from Indiana. He purchased the land from the Oregon and California Railroad Company and established a post office in 1872. The town was named after him.
Gates was a small farming community until the 1950s, when the population began to grow due to the expansion of the nearby city of Salem. The city was incorporated in 1965.

Gates is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to nearby cities for work. The city does have some small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 671.4 per square mile (259.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
