Central Point Summary

Central Point is a city located in Jackson County, Oregon, United States. It is situated in the Rogue Valley, approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Medford and 8 miles (13 km) south of the county seat of Jacksonville. The population was 17,169 at the 2010 census.

History

Central Point was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Jacksonville. The town was originally called "Central Point" because it was located at the intersection of two major roads, the Jacksonville-Gold Hill Road and the Jacksonville-Phoenix Road. The town was incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Central Point was a thriving agricultural community, with orchards, vineyards, and dairies. The town was also home to several sawmills and lumber mills. In the 1950s, the town began to experience rapid growth due to the expansion of the nearby Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport.

Geography

Central Point is located at 42°19′45″N 122°54′45″W (42.329167, -122.912500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.

Central Point is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to several wineries and vineyards, as well as a number of agricultural operations.

As of the census of 2010, there were 17,169 people, 6,845 households, and 4,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,310.2 people per square mile (1,277.3/km2). There were 7,093 housing units at an average density of 1,364.2 per square mile (526.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.2% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 6.7% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.2% of the population.
There were 6,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,845, and the median income for a family was $45,845. Males had a median income of $35,845 versus $25,845 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,845.
