Plentywood is a small city located in Sheridan County, Montana, United States. It is the county seat of Sheridan County and is located on the border with Canada. The population was 2,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Plentywood was founded in 1906 by the Great Northern Railway. The city was named after the nearby Plentywood Creek. The city was incorporated in 1909 and was the first city in Montana to have a mayor-council form of government.

Geography

Plentywood is located at 48°41'25"N 104°37'45"W (48.690278, -104.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Plentywood is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a fertilizer plant. The city is also home to several businesses, including a lumber yard, a hardware store, a grocery store, and a variety of restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,093 people, 845 households, and 545 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,743.2 people per square mile (673.2/km2). There were 919 housing units at an average density of 763.2 per square mile (295.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.1% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
