History

Laurel was founded in 1882 by the Northern Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the laurel bushes that grew in the area. The city was incorporated in 1902.

Geography

Laurel is located at 45°41'25" North, 108°37'45" West (45.690278, -108.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Laurel is a major agricultural center in the region, with a variety of crops grown in the area. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large paper mill. The city is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,743 people, 2,717 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,611.2 people per square mile (619.9/km2). There were 2,919 housing units at an average density of 693.2 per square mile (267.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.45% White, 0.20% African American, 0.90% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.45% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.17% of the population.
There were 2,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,921, and the median income for a family was $43,929. Males had a median income of $31,912 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845.
