Joliet Summary

Joliet is a small town located in Carbon County, Montana, United States. The town is situated on the banks of the Yellowstone River, approximately 20 miles east of Billings. The population of Joliet was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Joliet is located at 45°51'25" North, 108°45'45" West (45.856944, -108.762500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Joliet was founded in 1882 by the Northern Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the French explorer Louis Joliet, who explored the area in the late 1600s. The town was originally a stop on the Northern Pacific Railroad, and it quickly grew into a small but prosperous community.

Economy

Joliet is a small town with a limited economy. The town is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few small manufacturing businesses, including a furniture factory and a woodworking shop. The town is also home to a few small farms, which produce hay, wheat, and other crops.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 663.2 per square mile (256.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
