History

Yates Center was founded in 1873 and named after the first postmaster, William Yates. The city was incorporated in 1876. The first post office in Yates Center was established in 1873.

Geography

Yates Center is located at 37°51'25" North, 95°37'45" West (37.857139, -95.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Yates Center is a small rural community with a population of 1,417. The economy is largely based on agriculture, with the majority of the population employed in farming and related industries. The city also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,417 people, 590 households, and 393 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,179.2 people per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 645 housing units at an average density of 535.2 per square mile (206.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.14% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.41% of the population.
There were 590 households, out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 18.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96.
