Winfield Summary
Winfield, Kansas is a city located in Cowley County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the Walnut River, approximately 30 miles south of Wichita. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 12,301.
History
Winfield was founded in 1870 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The city was named after Winfield Scott, a prominent Union general in the American Civil War. The city was incorporated in 1879 and was the county seat of Cowley County.
In the late 19th century, Winfield was a major stop on the Chisholm Trail, which was used by cattle drivers to move their herds from Texas to Kansas. The city was also a major stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
Geography
Winfield is located at 37°14'25" North, 96°59'45" West (37.240278, -96.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Winfield is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural companies, including Cargill, Inc., and Tyson Foods. Winfield is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Winfield Manufacturing, Inc., and Winfield Industries.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 12,301 people, 4,845 households, and 3,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,496.3 people per square mile (577.7/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 621.3 per square mile (239.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.3% of the population.
There were 4,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $44,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $22,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
