Westphalia is a small town located in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, United States. The population was estimated to be around 200 people in 2020. Westphalia is located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, and is surrounded by rolling hills and prairies.

Geography

Westphalia is located at 39°25'45" North, 96°17'45" West (39.429167, -96.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.5 km2), all of it land.

History

Westphalia was founded in 1871 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Westphalia, Germany. The town was originally named Westphalia Station, but the name was changed to Westphalia in 1873. The town was incorporated in 1887.
Westphalia was a thriving agricultural community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town had a flour mill, a creamery, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel. The town also had a school, a church, and a post office.

Economy

Westphalia is a small, rural community with a limited economy. The town is home to a few small businesses, including a convenience store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The town also has a few farms and ranches in the area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 200 people, 79 households, and 57 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,037.2 people per square mile (400.3/km2).
