Wellington Summary

Wellington is a city located in Sumner County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 8,172. Wellington is the county seat of Sumner County and is located 25 miles south of Wichita.

History

The area that is now Wellington was first settled in 1871. The city was named after Wellington, Ohio, the hometown of one of the original settlers. The city was incorporated in 1872 and was designated as the county seat of Sumner County in 1873.
In the late 19th century, Wellington was a major stop on the Chisholm Trail, which was used by cattle drivers to move their herds from Texas to Kansas. The city was also a major stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

Geography

Wellington is located at 37°20'25" North, 97°26'45" West (37.340278, -97.445833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

Wellington is a major agricultural center in the region. The city is home to several large grain elevators and feed mills. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a large concrete plant and a metal fabrication plant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,092 people, 3,093 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 986.2 people per square mile (380.9/km²). There were 3,323 housing units at an average density of 404.3 per square mile (156.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 87.45% White, 0.90% African American, 0.90% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 8.45% from other races, and 2.30% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.45% of the population.
There were 3,093 households out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the city, the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,944, and the median income for a family was $38,919. Males had a median income of $29,917 versus $20,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 9.7% of those age 65 or over.
