History
Wakefield was founded in 1872 and named after the Wakefield family, who were early settlers in the area. The first post office in Wakefield was established in 1873. The city was incorporated in 1876.
Geography
Wakefield is located at 39°25'45" North, 97°14'45" West (39.429167, -97.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Wakefield is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the area.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 676.2 per square mile (261.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.11% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.14% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 19.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
