Wakefield Summary

Wakefield is a city located in Clay County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clay County.

History

Wakefield was founded in 1872 and named after the Wakefield family, who were early settlers in the area. The first post office in Wakefield was established in 1873. The city was incorporated in 1876.

Geography

Wakefield is located at 39°25'45" North, 97°14'45" West (39.429167, -97.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Wakefield is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the area.
