History

Wakeeney was founded in 1879 and was named after the Wakeeney Creek, which was named after a Native American chief. The city was incorporated in 1885 and was the first city in Trego County. The first post office was established in 1879 and the first school was built in 1881.
The city was a major stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which was built in 1887. The railroad brought many new settlers to the area and helped to spur economic growth.
