Towanda Summary

Towanda is a small town located in Butler County, Kansas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Whitewater River, about 10 miles south of El Dorado. The population was estimated to be 545 in the 2010 census.

History

Towanda was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Indiana. The town was named after Towanda, Pennsylvania, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1872.

In 1873 the first school was built in Towanda The town was incorporated in 1876

In the late 19th century, Towanda was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a lumber yard.

Towanda is located at 37°51'25"N, 96°51'45"W (37.856944, -96.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Towanda's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a lumber yard.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 372.3 per square mile (143.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.13.
