Toronto Summary

Toronto is a city located in Woodson County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the Neosho River, approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of the Kansas-Oklahoma border. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Toronto is located at 37°51'17" North, 95°45'17" West (37.854722, -95.754722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

The area that is now Toronto was first settled in the late 1850s. The town was originally named "Neosho City" after the nearby Neosho River. In 1872, the name was changed to "Toronto" after the Canadian city. The town was incorporated in 1879.

Economy

Toronto's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses located in the area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 708.3 per square mile (274.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945.
