Soldier Summary

Soldier, Kansas is a small town located in the northeast corner of Geary County, Kansas. It is situated on the banks of the Big Blue River, approximately 10 miles south of Junction City and Fort Riley. The town was founded in 1867 and was named after the nearby military post, Fort Riley. As of the 2010 census, the population of Soldier was 545.

Geography

Soldier is located at 39°14'45" North, 96°41'45" West (39.245833, -96.695833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Soldier is largely based on agriculture and the military. The town is home to several farms and ranches, as well as a few small businesses. The nearby military post, Fort Riley, is a major employer in the area and provides a significant economic boost to the town.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 366.2 per square mile (141.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.7% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
