Sedan Summary

Sedan, Kansas is a small town located in the southeastern corner of the state. It is situated in Chautauqua County, and is the county seat. The town was founded in 1871 and has a population of 1,072 as of the 2010 census.

Geography

Sedan is located at 37°14'N, 96°14'W, at an elevation of 1,068 feet (325 m). It is situated in the Osage Plains region of Kansas, and is surrounded by rolling hills and prairies. The town is located on the banks of the Verdigris River, which flows through the area. The nearest major city is Wichita, which is located about 70 miles (110 km) to the north.

Climate

Sedan has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. The average annual temperature is around 57°F (14°C), with an average high of around 79°F (26°C) in the summer and an average low of around 35°F (2°C) in the winter. The average annual precipitation is around 33 inches (84 cm).

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the population of Sedan was 1,072. The racial makeup of the town was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
