Scranton Summary

Scranton, Kansas is a small town located in the northeastern corner of Kansas, in the county of Osage. It is situated on the banks of the Marais des Cygnes River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The town was founded in 1867, and was named after the city of Scranton, Pennsylvania.

History

Scranton was founded in 1867 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the city of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and was originally intended to be a coal mining town. However, the coal deposits in the area were not as plentiful as expected, and the town soon shifted its focus to agriculture. The town was incorporated in 1872, and the first post office was established in 1873.
In the late 19th century, Scranton was a bustling agricultural center, with a variety of businesses and services. The town had a flour mill, a creamery, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a bank, and several stores. The town also had a newspaper, the Scranton Herald, which was published from 1887 to 1895.
In the early 20th century, Scranton experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The town was connected to the outside world by the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and the population grew to over 500 people.
