Satanta Summary
Satanta is a small town located in Haskell County, Kansas, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County.
History
Satanta was founded in 1885 and named after the Kiowa chief Satanta. The town was originally located in the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Indian Reservation, which was established in 1867. The town was moved to its current location in 1887 when the reservation was opened to white settlement.
Satanta was incorporated in 1887 and became the county seat of Haskell County in 1889. The town was a major stop on the Santa Fe Trail and was a major trading center for the area.
Geography
Satanta is located at 37°14'17" North, 99°45'45" West (37.238, -99.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Satanta's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators and a feed mill. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 248 housing units at an average density of 405.2 per square mile (156.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.25% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% Pacific Islander, 1.48% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.48% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.3% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
