Rantoul Summary
Rantoul is a small unincorporated community located in Franklin County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Marais des Cygnes River, approximately 8 miles south of Ottawa, the county seat. The population of Rantoul was estimated to be around 200 in 2020.
History
Rantoul was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Rantoul, Illinois, the hometown of one of the settlers. The town was originally located on the north side of the Marais des Cygnes River, but was moved to the south side in 1858 due to flooding.
Rantoul was an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail, and the town was a major trading post for settlers in the area. The town also served as a supply center for the Union Army during the Civil War.
In the late 19th century, Rantoul was a thriving community with a population of over 500. The town had several stores, a hotel, a blacksmith shop, a livery stable, a school, and a post office.

Rantoul is located at 38°45'25"N 95°14'45"W (38.7569, -95.2458). The town is situated along the banks of the Marais des Cygnes River, approximately 8 miles south of Ottawa, the county seat.
