Quinter was founded in 1885 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the Quinter family, who were early settlers in the area. The first post office was established in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Quinter was a thriving agricultural community. The city was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a lumber yard. The city also had a hotel, a bank, a newspaper, and several churches.

Quinter is located at 38°45'25" North, 100°14'17" West (38.756944, -100.238333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.3/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 686.6 per square mile (265.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
