Pratt Summary
Pratt, Kansas is a city located in the south-central part of the state, in Pratt County. It is the county seat and the most populous city in the county. The city is situated on the Arkansas River, and is located about 90 miles west of Wichita. As of the 2010 census, the population of Pratt was 6,835.
History
The area that is now Pratt was first settled in 1871, when the Santa Fe Railroad was built through the area. The city was named after Caleb Pratt, a railroad official. The city was incorporated in 1884.
In the early 1900s, Pratt was a major center for the cattle industry, and the city was home to several large stockyards. The city also had a large number of grain elevators, and was a major shipping point for grain.
In the 1950s, Pratt began to experience a decline in its economy, as the cattle industry moved away from the area. The city was also affected by the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, which caused a large number of people to leave the area.
Geography
Pratt is located at 37°37'N 98°25'W (37.6167, -98.4167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Pratt's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, and is a major shipping point for grain. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Pratt Industries, which produces paper products.

Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 6,835 people, 2,717 households, and 1,743 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,631.2 people per square mile (629.2/km2). There were 3,039 housing units at an average density of 725.2 per square mile (280.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 8.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.2% of the population.
There were 2,717 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,917, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,917. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
