Portis Summary
Portis is a small city located in Osborne County, Kansas. It is situated in the north-central part of the state, about 50 miles northwest of Salina. The city has a population of approximately 500 people, and is the county seat of Osborne County.
History
Portis was founded in 1887 by the Union Pacific Railroad. The city was named after a railroad official, William Portis. The city was incorporated in 1891, and the first post office was established in 1892.
In the early 1900s, Portis was a thriving agricultural community. The city was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a creamery. The city also had a bank, a hotel, a newspaper, and a variety of other businesses.
