Plainville Summary
Plainville is a small city located in Rooks County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rooks County.
History
Plainville was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after Plainfield, Pennsylvania, the hometown of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1873. The first school was built in 1875.
In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a branch line from Hays to Plainville. This branch line was later extended to Stockton and eventually to Denver, Colorado. This branch line allowed Plainville to become an important shipping point for the surrounding area.
In 1891, the first newspaper, the Plainville Times, was established. The first bank was established in 1895.
Geography
Plainville is located at 39°17'25" North, 99°20'45" West (39.290278, -99.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Plainville is largely based on agriculture. The main crops grown in the area are wheat, corn, and soybeans. The city also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,717 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,420.2 people per square mile (548.7/km2). There were 762 housing units at an average density of 622.3 per square mile (239.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.35% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.41% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
