Pawnee Rock is a small town located in Barton County, Kansas, United States. The town is situated on the banks of the Arkansas River, and is home to a population of just over 200 people. The town was founded in 1872, and is named after the nearby Pawnee Rock, a large sandstone formation that was used as a landmark by Native Americans and early settlers.

Geography

Pawnee Rock is located at 38°14'17" North, 98°59'45" West (38.238, -98.996). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all of it land.
The town is located in the High Plains region of the Great Plains, and is characterized by flat terrain and sparse vegetation. The Arkansas River flows through the town, and is a major source of water for the area.
