History

The area that is now Ottawa was first settled in 1864 by a group of settlers from Ottawa, Illinois. The city was named after the original settlers’ hometown. The city was incorporated in 1867 and was designated as the county seat of Franklin County.
In the late 19th century, Ottawa was a major stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The city was also a major center for the production of agricultural products, such as wheat, corn, and livestock.

Geography

Ottawa is located at 38°37′N 95°15′W (38.619, -95.250). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.6 km2), of which 8.6 square miles (22.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Ottawa’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large manufacturing companies, including John Deere, Cargill, and Tyson Foods. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, such as restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 12,649 people, 4,945 households, and 3,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,467.2 people per square mile (567.2/km2). There were 5,521 housing units at an average density of 641.2 per square mile (248.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.3% of the population.
There were 4,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $43,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $22,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945. About 8.7% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
