Onaga Summary

Onaga is a small city located in Pottawatomie County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the banks of the Kansas River, approximately 25 miles east of Topeka. The population was 1,039 at the 2010 census.

History

Onaga was founded in 1857 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Onaga Indians, a tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area. The town was incorporated in 1872 and has remained a small, rural community ever since.
The town was a stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which was built in 1887. The railroad brought new businesses and people to the area, and the town grew rapidly. By the early 1900s, Onaga had a population of over 1,000 people.
The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a flour mill, a creamery, a lumber yard, a hotel, and several stores. The town also had a school, a post office, and a bank.

Geography

Onaga is located at 39°25'45" North, 96°14'45" West (39.429167, -96.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Onaga’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, wheat, and other crops. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,039 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.4 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 690.0 per square mile (266.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
