Olpe Summary

Olpe, Kansas is a small town located in Lyon County, in the east-central part of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Neosho River, about 25 miles south of Emporia. The town was founded in 1871 and was named after the Greek goddess of the same name. As of the 2010 census, the population of Olpe was 545.

Geography

Olpe is located at 38°25'25" North, 96°14'17" West (38.423, -96.238). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
The town is located in the Flint Hills region of Kansas, and is surrounded by rolling hills and prairies. The Neosho River runs through the town, and is a popular spot for fishing and canoeing.

Economy

The economy of Olpe is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, and the surrounding area is used for growing corn, soybeans, and wheat. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
