Norton Summary

Norton is a city located in Norton County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Norton County.

History

Norton was founded in 1871 by the Union Pacific Railroad. It was named after Orloff Norton, a railroad official. The first post office in Norton was established in 1872.

Geography

Norton is located at 39°51'17" North, 99°54'17" West (39.854722, -99.904722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Norton is a small agricultural community. The main industries are farming, ranching, and oil production. The city also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,945 people, 1,214 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,269.2 people per square mile (876.7/km2). There were 1,346 housing units at an average density of 1,037.2 per square mile (400.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.17% African American, 0.48% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.22% of the population.
There were 1,214 households, out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $39,375. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,845.
