Mound Valley is a small city located in Labette County, Kansas, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburg, KS Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Mound Valley was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named for the nearby Mound Valley Creek, which was named for the Native American mounds that were located in the area. The town was incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Mound Valley was a thriving agricultural community. The town had a flour mill, a creamery, a lumber yard, a blacksmith shop, and several other businesses. The town also had a school, a church, and a post office.

Geography

Mound Valley is located at 37°14'25" North, 95°14'17" West (37.240278, -95.238056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Mound Valley's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 152 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 373.2 per square mile (144.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 24.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 8.3% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
